BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Cougars Spike Buffaloes, 3-1

Abraham Palacios had 16 kills to pace Weston Ranch in its 3-1 victory over Manteca in a boys volleyball game last night at Weston Ranch High School.

The Cougars won by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, and 27-25.

“Last night was a solid team win,” said head coach Rebecca Kinlaw. “I was pleased with our performance because we stepped up our level of play and matched our opponent’s intensity and skill level. From the first moment the team stepped onto the court, they brought a lot of energy and maintained that energy for the entire match.”

In addition to leading the Cougars in kills, Palacios had 17 digs, seven blocks, and two service aces. Eleazar Nava collected 26 assists on the night and also tallied six digs. Diego Montes led the Cougars with 21 digs, and Tommy Duong finished with 14 digs. Amari Dacus had seven kills and two blocks.

“Abraham, Amari, Eleazar, Tommy, and Diego were able to step up at crucial moments of the game to get key plays that swayed the games back into our favor,” Kinlaw said. “Several times we found ourselves down in points during the four sets, but those five guys kept their composures and fought back to secure the wins.”

Also having a big night for Weston Ranch were Josiah Zamarripa (four blocks), James Gelisanga (three kills and six digs), and Maeson Bayot (three kills).

“Josiah, Maeson, and James were able to control the front row with key blocks and kills,” Kinlaw added.

Weston Ranch is now 3-0 and plays at East Union on March 8. JV will play at 5 p.m., and the Varsity will follow at 6 p.m.
