Girls Soccer Beats Johansen to Secure Season’s First Win
Weston Ranch girls soccer beat Johansen High School of Modesto, 3-2, yesterday at Johansen. The win was just one of many firsts for this year’s club.
It was the first Varsity win for head coach Bailey Nelson and the program’s first win in nearly a year (the last time the Cougars won was when they beat Lathrop High School, 3-2, on November 22, 2021). Yesterday’s victory also marked the first time the program has been 1-0 since 2018. So it was quite the day for the girls’ soccer program.
Fatima Ruiz scored the first goal for the Cougars, and Allison Jacinto knocked home goals two and three. Adrianna Escobedo assisted on all three goals.
Weston Ranch goalie Anabelle Mayorca had the game’s biggest play when she turned away a Johansen penalty kick in the second half. The Cougars also got strong defensive play from Isabelle Mayorca and Cristal Garcia.
“Good game overall,” Nelson said.
The Cougars play Lathrop on November 23 at Weston Ranch. JV plays at 2:30, and the Varsity kicks off at 4.
