SOCCER: Cougars Win Fourth in a Row

Weston Ranch put up another VOL win yesterday by defeating Manteca 4-1. After an opening game tie against Oakdale and a follow-up loss to East Union, the Cougars have now won four in a row and stormed into second place.  The Cougars are now 4-1-1 on the season and trail first place East Union by one game.

Junior’s Angel Zapata and Aaron Silva provided all the scoring for the Cougars. Zapata knocked home three goals, and Silva kicked in the fourth. Zapata’s hat trick pushed his team-leading total to six goals on the year. Silva’s goal put him right behind Zapata with five goals on the year. Both players now rank in the top 10 for scoring in the VOL. Zapata’s effort earned him Player of the Game status on maxpreps.com.

“Angel had himself a monster game,” coach Francisco Cisneros said on Max Preps. “After missing many shots in his previous game, he bounced back and recorded his first varsity hat trick. He also made sure to help fortify the defense by playing center back for the last 20 minutes of the game.”

Mauro Valdez, Dannick Hernandez, and Sergio Rayo each had an assist.

Last night’s win was impressive because the Cougars battled team injuries and played short-handed with their roster numbers. They were without seven of their regular players. Battling injuries, fatigue, and a constantly changing environment, Cisneros is inspired by the team he sends out to the field.

“In a season where injuries and quarantine have played a role, it’s been amazing to see how players are stepping up. This team has shown they’re mentally tough, and their build-up and possession keep getting better each week. We are getting some players back next week, so I look forward to that,” Cisneros told The Prowl.

Cisneros added, “Cesar Juarez continues to fill in at goalie had three saves. Another solid game for the Cougars with key contributions from Alex Cadis, Julian Hernandez, Ivan Guerra, Armando Montes, and Mauricio Morales. I’m grateful for our JV players who stepped up and proved they could play at the varsity level.”

After a shaky beginning, the Cougars look like they are firing on all cylinders right now. Weston Ranch has tallied 19 goals during this win streak while surrendering only five.

The Cougars are on the road for two games next week, taking on Kimball (5/11) and Ripon Christian (5/14).
