BASEBALL: Cougars Sweep Ripon Christian

Weston Ranch baseball put an exclamation point on this week as they completed a two-game sweep of Ripon Christian. On Tuesday, the Cougars beat Ripon Christian 2-0. Yesterday, behind the strong pitching of freshman Ayden Tinsley, strong defense, and an 8-run 3rd inning, the Cougars defeated Ripon Christian 12-2 in a five-inning mercy shortened game.

“Ayden gave us a great chance to win today,” Cougars coach David Hager told The Prowl. “We’re building a foundation, trying to get better every game, and build confidence. Getting a sweep of Ripon Christian, a team that has been on a bit of a roll, really helps us move into next week against Sierra.”

Tinsley worked the strike zone effectively, kept the Knights off-balance, and never allowed them to string hits together. When he did allow runners, the Cougar defenders came up with big plays to thwart any chance of a Knight rally. In five innings, Tinsley surrendered six hits, struck out two, and walked one. Keeping the Knights off the bases was a big key to the victory for Tinsley. The Knights came into the game hitting .272 as a team and had scored 74 runs on the season. The win was the first for Tinsley this year.

“It feels good to get a win,” Tinsley said. “Knowing the defense had my back made it really easy to get comfortable and pitch. I’m very happy to get the win for us.”

Weston Ranch (3-9) used an 8-run 3rd inning to give Tinsley all the support he would need. The Cougars led 2-0 as they entered their half of the third inning. Three consecutive doubles by Steven Bustamante, Mi’Son Coilton, and Dustin Tinsely put the Cougs up 4-0. Ayden Tinsley helped his cause by delivering a single, scoring his brother from second, and the Cougars led 5-0. Three more runs crossed the plate, and the Cougars never looked back.

Offensively, Rogelio Ruvalcaba was on base after all four of his plate appearances by walking once, collecting two hits, and scoring three runs. Andrew Montano singled and scored two runs.
