For the past four years, Mr. Basepayne has been coaching the Weston Ranch High swimming team and has experienced and learned many things during this time. He has seen many talented young swimmers come and go, but out of all the swimmers he has coached, one Cougar has made the most waves.

This student is Senior Garrett Kmiec. For 13 years, Garrett has been working hard at pushing himself to improve his abilities and expand on his talents in the unique sport of swimming and is happy to see his hard work has paid off. Being his final season as a Cougar, he is understandably sad about leaving the family he has made at Weston Ranch behind, but his future in sports and academics look very bright for this seemingly “drown phobic” swimmer.

Garrett has been swimming competitively year-round for five years and has left a long trail of achievements on his journey to his last year as a Cougar. For all four years of his high school career, he managed to qualify for the Section tournament and made a huge splash every time. Never finishing below second place in any of the events he competed in every year alone shows the talent Kmiec has for the sport, but second place was not the highest position for his finishes. During his Junior year, he managed to finish first in the backstroke and on his senior campaign he came home with first-place finishes in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Garrett finished up his VOL career with a total of 7 VOL titles and one runner up title.

“Thanks for being so chill and making it such a fun sport,” said Kmiec.
“The way our coaches approached swimming made it feel like a family.

Through the years, he had experienced many things, from his highest accomplishments to funny team moments like when fellow senior swimmer Ron Mendoza accidentally locked himself in the pool area just before leaving for a meet. Kmiec will surely miss his school, and likewise, we will miss him.

Kmiec is not only a great swimmer, but he also maintained a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the County Honor Band.

Good luck Garrett hope the future serves you well.
