The Weston Ranch Boys Varsity Soccer team is quietly making a run at the VOL championship. Perhaps playing in the shadow of the boy’s varsity basketball team, the soccer team has established themselves as just as worthy and will have the opportunity to reach the goal of league champion this week and next. If the Cougars win a make-up game today against Central Catholic, they will set up a showdown for the championship on Tuesday against Sierra. Of course, all of this depends on how the final two games turn out.

Currently, the team is 8-1-1 in the competitive Valley Oak League. Led by Senior Robert Gonzalez, Junior Elvin Bolanos, and with Junior goalie Francisco Vega tending the net, the Cougars are poised to win their first league championship since 2014-2015. It is a pretty impressive record which the boys are determined only to improve.

So far, the players all agree that their best memory has been their big win again Sierra High School, defeating the Timberwolves 3-2. It is obvious there is a specific connection throughout the team that keeps them thriving and winning. Although their game on January 29 against Oakdale ended in a 1-1 tie, they made up for it in their game last night against Manteca, beating the Buffaloes handily 4-1. Bolanos, Chucho Vega, Edgar Molina, and Issac Espino all scored huge goals for the winning team.

With all the wins we asked the boys how they plan on keeping up the streak going. Bolanos, a forward and a star player on the team, responded by saying, “We will keep on winning by staying focused on the field.”

Today the Cougars will face Central Catholic today at home. A win today makes Tuesday’s game against Sierra a game for all the marbles. Tuesday’s game is currently scheduled for Tuesday at Lathrop High School, with kick off beginning at 5:45. Keep up with good work boys!
