Weston Ranch wrestling had an impressive first meet last Saturday at Laguna Creek High School of Elk Grove. The day was lengthy, but the rewards were worth the commitment as seven of the 13 wrestlers who competed won medals for head coach Benito Guardiola’s group.

“It was a long day that started at 5 am in front of the school,” Guardiola stated. “We left at 5:30 and drove to Elk Grove to start our day. First, we weighed in, warmed up, and completed the groom check. Then, we began wrestling around 9:30 am and ended around 5:30 pm,” Guardiola stated.

Weston Ranch wrestling is relatively unknown on the campus and lives in the shadow of soccer and basketball. However, those who follow Cougars wrestling know coach Guardiola is quietly building a respectable program. Each Winter, the Cougars get on the mat and showcase heart and determination of unequaled vigor and courage.

Most of the Cougars are novice wrestlers, meaning this is the first time any of them have stepped inside the wrestling mat’s circle. Some wrestlers had four matches during the long day, but the results were incredible for this up-and-coming program.

“Considering that most of these kids just started wrestling this year and knew nothing of this sport a month ago, I am very proud of how hard they worked and continued to push themselves,” Guardiola stated.

Yovan Soberanis and Jason Chavez took 1st place in their respective weight classifications of 160 and 170 pounds. Maddox Lo, Isreal Nelson, and Daniel Nieto took home 2nd place medals in the 106, 145, and 195 pounds weight classes. Marvin Pasagui and Joseph Richardson finished in 3rd place for the 220 pounds class.

Not only did the Cougars wrestle well, but they also represented Weston Ranch High School with great spirit and sportsmanship.

“I also want to mention that we received praise during the tournament for our team being well-behaved and energetic,” Guardiola stated.

Weston Ranch will be back in action on November 26 at Pittsburg High School for its match with the Pirates.
