Cross Country Off and Running

Cross Country opened their racing season last Saturday as they competed in the Lagoon Valley Classic in Folsom. Cross country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrains such as dirt or grass. The runners are tasked to run a 3-mile race for varsity and a 2-mile race for JV and Freshman.

Brian Arevalo took off from the starting line and finished in first place for the Cougars, racing in the small school division. Arevalo, who returns from last year’s team, won the race in a time of 16:13.4. Jorge Machuca finished 9th with a time of 16:59.7. Arevalo and Machuca gave the Cougars to top-10 finishers.

On the girls’ side, Janiah Basco finished her 2-mile race in a time of 14:45.0. Basco finished 21st.

Cross country will compete tomorrow in the Josh Ruff Invitational and then in their first VOL race on September 18th.  Photos courtesy of Coach West.
