Next week, Weston Ranch will stand up to bullying.

Beginning Monday, December 4 through Friday, December 8, activities will highlight the consequences of bullying in high school through an anti-bullying campaign..

Unfortunately, bullying is seen quite often through high students.

According to recent statistics from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), about 20 percent of U.S. students in grades 9 to12 have experienced some form of bullying.

There are many different types of bullying. Due to students’ use of the Internet and mobile smart phone applications like Snapchat and Instagram, cyber bullying can be found in many high schools. The percent of individuals who have experienced cyberbullying at some point in their lifetimes have nearly doubled from 18 to 34 percent from 2007-2016.

Verbal abuse also is a leading form of bullying.

Any form of bullying can cause dire consequences.

According to HHS, over 14 percent of students have considered suicide and almost 7 percent have attempted it due to bullying.

And just like with any other form of harassment, people being bullied are scared to tell because they think it’s just going to make it worse.

Among students who responded, 64 percent said that they were bullied did not report it, while only 36 percent did report their experience.

We need more people to come forward and tell when they see someone being bullied.

Don’t be a bystander be the person who starts to make a change.
