Weston Ranch Senior Amaya Finley is set to rise above the net and to the occasion next year.

Finley, a girls’ volleyball standout for the Cougars, will continue to play next season.

On Nov. 16, Finley officially signed with Iowa Central College where she will play on the court as a Triton.

As a Cougar, Finley put the finishing touches on an accomplished high school resume, boasting three all-first team volleyball selections and four straight years on Weston Ranch’s varsity team.

Why leave the palm trees of the West for the corn fields of the Midwest?

“Iowa Central felt like it was for me,” Finley told The Prowl. “I wanted to experience a different environment.”

Though Iowa Central wasn’t the first or only college to seek Finley out, “Iowa stuck out to me.”

Finley’s teammate, Arianna Garibay, tells The Prowl that “I couldn’t be any more proud and happy for her as a teammate and close friend for signing with Iowa to continue her education and passion for the game.”

Volleyball Head Coach Eddie Menzel says he’s glad to have coached Finley and hopes she does well when at Iowa.

Next year, Finley will study Criminal Justice to become a probation officer. Finley said that she plans to minor in Sociology.

Now, if the opportunity arose that allowed Finley to play volleyball professionally, Finley said she’d still focus on earning her degree.

Finley said the post-graduation transition is already making her nervous, though there are months to go before the end of May.

“Home is 26 hours away,” Finley said. “And I know I’ll be home sick.”
