Ever since 2012, my favorite band has been Imagine Dragons.

If there was any doubt, having seen and heard them live, I am a believer.

When I was bought tickets to see them up close on Oct. 4 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento – right in front of the stage – I was ecstatic. And they didn’t let me down.

Imagine Dragons began their string of songs with “I Don’t Know Why” and as soon as they were on stage everyone began screaming. Shortly after the first song, band front man and lead singer, Dan Reynolds, addressed the slight elephant in the concert room: the Las Vegas shooting.

Imagine Dragons hails from Las Vegas and they all consider it their hometown. Lead singer Dan Reynolds made a touching speech essentially saying that we must never stop gathering for music and continue to go to concerts even after the frightful event of the Oct. 1 mass shooting. Such an act becomes incredibly brave.
Reynolds dedicated “It’s Time” to Las Vegas and you could tell his heart was in it.

Throughout every song played, there was always emotion. It never faltered. It wasn’t always upbeat, though.

Reynolds, who has spoken out many times about his depression, made a little speech about embracing your depression instead of hiding it and sang a tear-jerking rendition of “Demons” that had almost everyone in the seats using their phone flashlights to wave them high in the air in unity.

In various parts of the show, balloons, bubbles filled with smoke (that the audience could see Dan Reynolds popping while performing), confetti, smoke, and white strips of paper were released from above the crowd during high points of songs. Fans loudly singing along with the songs were highly encouraged by Reynolds and when the audience yelled back, which they always did, his smile was great and wide.

Imagine Dragons also paid homage to the late Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Tom Petty, who died Oct. 2, by covering Petty’s classic, “I Won’t Back Down.”

When they left the stage after singing their extended version of “Radioactive,” screams for an encore proceeded and they came back on stage to finish the night off with “Believer.”

The concert began at 7:30 pm with K. Flay as the first opening act She was clearly into her music and having a good time, as was her drummer and guitarist. Many concertgoers enjoyed her music. There was a lot of dancing and head-banging to her songs which included “High Enough,” “Make Me Fade,” “Blood in The Cut,” “Giver,” “Black Wave” and “Dreamers.”

When she was done, she introduced the other opening act, Grouplove.

After the stage was prepared for Grouplove, they began singing. It seemed like Grouplove was a large step down from K. Flay. Not as many people seemed to be into their music. Their songs blended together into noise. It signaled a time to explore the Golden 1 Center and check out the lounge.

The only song that stuck out was “Shark Attack.” It was memorable, not because of the lyrics, but because the drummer put on a shark mascot head. For Grouplove, the shark head, their confusing teeth sign, and the random lying down on stage and getting on top of one another was the only memorable part of their performance, but not in a good way.

While there were some annoyances at the concert, I had an amazing time. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience. No Imagine Dragons concert is exactly the same and I will remember that night for the rest of my life.
