I’ll admit it.

The play, “Why Darkness Seems So Light,” was better than I thought it would be.

The experience of watching the actors was a lot different watching now, than when I was interviewing them last month here https://cougarprowl.net/1724/cougar-life/light-at-the-end-of-the-play/

“Why Darkness Seems So Light” makes sense now after watching it.

The fall play is usually a limited run serious-minded drama while the spring play is a lighthearted musical that plays over more than one weekend. The success of this production should project well for the rest of the academic year.

The way the actors played their roles was well-crafted and played out well.

In some scenes, you can tell they made mistakes but that’s what happens during live performances at times. One of the actors smiled during one of the parts when the audience started laughing.

The one part of the play that stood out the most to me was the almost rape and assault scenes. When Marcus grabbed Whitney and tried to force himself onto her, the emotion conveyed by the way the actors interacted and played the scene was powerful, I honestly forgot I was watching a play for a moment there. It felt uncomfortable.

The other scene involved a drunken dad was pushing and swinging at the mom and her kids. When the mother screamed after her husband grabbed her by the throat and threw her afterwards, that impacted me as an audience member.

Overall, I would rate this play an 8 out of 10. I thoroughly enjoyed it. With just a few tweaks to performances, this would be a solid 10.
