The cougar-like roar coming from families and friends in the stadium stands could be heard throughout Weston Ranch. Then there were the air horns and tambourines.

It was understandable. This bittersweet main event on the field was years in the making – four to be exact.

With women in white and men in maroon, the Weston Ranch Class of 2017 entered as seniors at the start of the sunset ceremony Friday night and exited as graduates, hold their hard-earned diplomas.

When Senior Class President Melissa Munoz officially presented her class to the packed stadium, iPhones, Androids and conventional cameras flashed to capture the mix of dancing and tears during the moment that finally had arrived.

“I just think it’s always mixed emotion,” said veteran Weston Ranch Math teacher Ricardo Salas, who sat on the grassy field with the graduates during the ceremony. “I’m very happy to see them and get final pictures with them,” Salas said.

While graduation itself could be summed up in photos, the valedictorian address compared life to the written word.

Valedictorian Charlie Zhang described life as an essay written in ink, an idea that many could relate to during his humorous speech.

When the gates to the outer fence opened, family and friends flooded onto the football field to embrace and to take pictures with their graduates.

As families and friends struck poses, Weston Ranch Principal Francine Baird stepped back to remember the big picture of this annual event.

“I absolutely love this school and how this community has come together to bid them farewell,” Baird said. “And I can’t wait for next year.”
