Cal-Poly Stockton?

My fellow Stockton residents, doesn’t this sound nice?

There is a possibility this could be a thing now. Both California State Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman and Jeffrey Michael, director of the University of Pacific’s Center for Business and Policy Research, are pushing for the next state university to be built in Stockton.

According to a recent issue of The (Stockton) Record, Eggman told the Stockton City Council,  “We need to be speaking with one voice to tell our story to the rest of the state, to be able to have something here would be transformative.” Eggman said, “At some point they are going to build a new public university in the state of California. We want it to be here.”

Weston Ranch student counselors Stuart Farrell and Daisy Carmona agree with Eggman. Cal-Poly Stockton would be a welcome addition to the city.

“It’s a great idea,” Farrell said. “Some students have to commute and the commute can be extensive cause of traffic.”

Along with saving time, Carmona said a new university also could save students money.

“Students wouldn’t have to go far for College,” Carmona said, “You could graduate without debt.”

I think our own Cal-Poly could make Stockton great again. As a junior thinking about graduation, I am weighing my options. Leaving for college can bring either the expense of commuting or the expense of moving.

A Cal-Poly Stockton could give many ambitious, educated and professional people another reason to stay here in Stockton rather than moving away to the Bay Area or Sacramento.

Isn’t this what Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs and our city leaders want to happen? Keep Stocktonians at home to revitalize neighborhoods, to start businesses and to hire their neighbors.

Isn’t this how you #ReinventStockton ?

I hope this goal – a Cal-Poly Stockton – is pushed for and comes to be. It could mean so much to the future of Stockton.
