Girls Tennis Gets Historic Victory Against Vikings

Weston Ranch Varsity girls tennis made history on August 30. Not only was it their first match of the season, but it was also the Cougars first match in the San Joaquin Athletic Association (SJAA). Weston Ranch defeated Edison High School 7-2 to record the school’s first win as the league’s newest member.

The Vikings of Edison were not strangers to the Cougars, as the two schools regularly competed in past pre-season tune-ups. However, this time the match had more on the line as the two schools squared off as league opponents. And the Cougars went on to drub the Vikings, perhaps sending a message to the rest of the SJAA that Weston Ranch tennis will be a tough out the rest of the way.

Number 1 singles player Harvir Hothi set the tone early after she dispatched her Vikings opponent 2 games to 1. Hothi, an 11th grader, was an All-VOL Doubles awardee along with Finnish student Ella Nykanen last season, and she certainly picked up where she left off and will carry the team as the number one as the season progresses.

Other winners for the Cougars were Giselle Rivera, who won her match 2-1, Nguyet Ngo, a straight-set winner, and Allegra Rios, who also won in straight sets.

“Kudos to singles players Harvir, Giselle, Nguyet, and Allegra for their victories,” head coach Michael Cerezo said.

Weston Ranch won its only doubles match and accepted two forfeits for the others. The team of Aaliyah Hassan and Heidi Araiza cruised to their straight-set victory, winning 6-1 and 6-1.

Weston Ranch will be on the road for its next match. The Cougars will visit Bear Creek High School of Stockton. Matches will begin at 3:30.
