MEChA is a student organization that promotes higher education, community engagement, political participation, culture, and history.
Established in the 1960s during the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, the club was organized (at a college level) for political purposes to address violence against the Latino youth making up the West and Southwest such as California, Washington, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. The club was also to address unequal education in public schools.

The MEChA club, standing for “Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan” or “Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan,” began out as a college club with now holding 500 chapters (as of 2012) throughout American universities with many members from different backgrounds.

The MEChA club advisor at Weston Ranch High School, Ms. Cervantes, states that “at the high school level, the goal of MECHa is to promote cultural awareness throughout campus and higher education.”

The club members promote awareness by celebrating Mexico Independence Day, playing Latin American music during Hispanic Heritage Month, and celebrating Dia de Los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo on campus. The club also fundraises to pay for transportation to various universities to expose students to higher education.

One of the many universities the club plans to visit is San Francisco State University sometime in March. The club also volunteers locally, like at the Stockton Asparagus Festival. Also, an event is being planned to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in May.

The club also hopes to one day have a WRHS Aztec Dancers or Dance Folklorico group to continue celebrating the diverse culture on campus.
Ms. Cervantes’s goal is for “students to build a long-lasting relationship with education” and for students to become proud leaders in their communities through a multicultural, diverse club.
