New Study Shows COVID Delta Variant Deaths Decrease with Vaccinations

According to a new study in the United Kingdom, the Pfizer & AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines can reduce the death risk from the Delta Variant by a whopping 90%. Knowing this and how the Delta Variant is the most dominant form of the coronavirus in many countries, including the U.S, should encourage people to get their vaccines if they haven’t already.

The new study collected data from Scotland, about 5.4 million people between the first of April this year and the twenty-seventh of September. This was the first country-wide assessment regarding the effectiveness of vaccines in preventing COVID-19 deaths.

According to the findings published in a letter in the New England Journal of Medicine, both vaccines (Pfizer & AstraZeneca) were at least 90% effective in fully vaccinated people. The Moderna vaccine is also available, but no deaths have been reported to those who have had both doses, so estimating the effectiveness was impossible.

“If you still have not taken up your offer to be vaccinated, I would encourage you to do so based on the clear benefits it offers,” says study leader Aziz Sheikh, the director of the University of Edinburgh’s Usher Institute.
