Mass Media and the Harmful Long Term Effects

Mass media has had a major and impact on the world. Today there are so many new ways of broadcasting news, such as in film, television, music, video games, social media, and different sources of information. Today thousands of people use media to talk to people. People communicate through Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok, IMessage, Facetime, Tinder, different dating apps; everything now consists of the media.

Mass media accommodates children, adolescents, and even adults. Is mass media positively impacting children? As far as I can say, it depends on what they are watching and how long they are watching it. Children should not be given a phone at an early age because it can harmfully impact their mental problems and ruin their personality. When they are consistently watching television or staring into a screen, it can make them feel dependent on that media and cause them to feel isolated. When kids are always on or watching media, their physical development is hindered because they stay inside watching media rather than playing outside.

Adolescents consist of the ages 10 to 19. Media can neutrally impact adolescents because, if you are given a phone as a teen, you are more prone to live your childhood outdoors being less dependent on phones and media than the kids who are given phones at a young age and never got to experience a good childhood. Younger adolescents are the ones you have to watch more carefully with social media because their bodies are “maturing at a higher speed than their minds,” so people tend to take advantage of that. When it comes to sexual events, media can have a vast, harmful impact because it can make adolescents feel forced to quickly get into the content that is being displayed in the media. Media can positively influence kids and teens because they can connect with other teens and kids worldwide to talk to and learn new things firsthand. It is also beneficial for the teens going through stuff at home that they cannot speak to anyone else about.

Adults are the main ones to be overlooked when it comes to mass media. I believe that the impact of media can negatively affect them. Mass media affects adults negatively because the human brain is already fully developed, so you don’t have to think as much as you would if you were an adolescent. Mass media negatively impacts their lives because it becomes addicting to where you do not want to do anything. As this happens, you don’t want to work. You don’t want to do anything but lay in bed, which is terrible because they are no longer children, they are adults. They have to put up a front on where they are in life and how well they are or are not doing. Since being 18 years old makes you an adult, you are just finishing high school, maybe you are going to college or start working. Some adults do not have their lives figured out yet, while others do, and it could make most of them feel like they aren’t doing enough. Along with other mass media, the news equally takes part in this because they sit there and tell them how they should or should not live their lives, so when adults think they are doing good, they see these things that are telling them they are doing the bare minimum.

The amount of media that is being portrayed and how it affects people is all different. Some believe that showing young kids video games and movies can affect their mental health, and they are more prone to become violent later on in life, while others think otherwise. Many say that television and other forms of media can cause educational damage. It honestly depends on the person and how much screen time they are given because everybody is different, and their intake of things like mass media is extra.
