Klay Thompson’s Injury Deals Blow to Warriors Title Hopes

On November 18, 2020, the Golden State Warriors announced shooting guard Klay Thompson suffered a tear in his Achilles and will be ruled out for the 2020-2021 NBA season. Thompson, arguably a top 10 shooting guard of all time and a top 2 shooter of all time, will force the Warriors to enter the season without his services and puts the upcoming comeback season’s future success in jeopardy.

The Golden state warriors announced that he had suffered a leg injury at an off-season workout in Los Angeles but still had no idea what was wrong. On November 19, 2020, Thompson had an MRI, and it came back that he had suffered an Achilles tear in his right leg. This news is super devastating because he just came back from an ACL injury back in the 2019-20 finals, where he played like an MVP caliber player with his backcourt partner, Stephen Curry. He was ready to come back to the rotation this December and start in his shooting guard position. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of NBA.com, he will not return until 2021, which is a severe blow to the Warriors because they were supposed to make a title run again.

Overall the Warriors have had horrible luck for the past year with Kevin Durant tearing his ACL, Stephen curry breaking his hand and Klay’s ACL injury. The Warriors have reportedly been in “serious talks” with the Oklahoma City Thunder to get Kelly Oubre, jr, to fill in the shooting guard spot. Warriors fans are not sure how next season will go. Fans should wish for the best. The Warriors still have enough talent to at least make the conference finals this season, but Thompson’s loss will hurt.

The Warriors can potentially get Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee and come back strong for this new season, but that would mean Giannis will have to demand a trade and want out of Milwaukee. When Kevin Durant made the switch to the Warriors, that was a dream lineup for Golden State, one many people thought wouldn’t happen, so Antetokounmpo making a move, while a pipedream, isn’t that farfetched. The Warriors can do a lot with free agency coming up. They can get top-class players like Anthony Davis, Montrezl Harrell, Brandon Ingram, to name a few, capable of joining the Warriors. If not, fans have to hope Thompson can return earlier than expected.
