Student Spotlight: Yasmeen Murphy

Junior Yasmeen Murphy has had a pretty exciting month here at Weston Ranch. First, she helped launch WRHS’s Gender Sexuality Alliance club, and, second, she was named Student of the Month for February at MUSD’s most recent Board of Education meeting held last Tuesday.

In addition to her strong academic presence on campus (she currently maintains a 3.75 GPA), she is also well known for her kindness and generosity. Her strong work ethic and ability to empathize with others began before she stepped onto this campus.

Murphy’s mother was diagnosed with Leukemia before entering the 9th grade. Because her mother spent months in the hospital, Murphy spent her time becoming independent, as well as being a caregiver to her little sister and mother. To say she had many obstacles to overcome is an understatement.

Throughout this trying time in her life, she learned time management and valuable life skills that she still keeps with her to this day. Furthermore, this hardship shaped her into the caring and compassionate person she is today. She has learned that others go through difficulties as well and that people needed support, so she decided to be that support.

The support she offers comes in many varieties. She decided to help by creating a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community of the campus. She supports her classmates with her drive to achieve academically. She uses her talents to support WR’s California Scholarship Federation (CSF) as she is an active member. Finally, she supports younger students by acting as a tutor and mentor.

Yasmeen always has a very positive outlook on life and pushes people to be the best they can, even when she is having a bad day.

“I saw her as a leader,” said Yasmeen’s Geometry teacher, Ms. Vang. “She is a leader amongst her friends inside and outside of the classroom because of her maturity.”

Congratulations to Yasmeen for being recognized by MUSD and for her accomplishments as a student, a leader, and a friend. The campus is a better place because of students like her.
