The WRHS cross country team concluded their season on October 30, and the season-ending race produced tremendous results for the Cougars. The team participated in the VOL Championships at Woodward Reservoir in Oakdale and wrapped up a very successful season of racing.

Led by Senior boys Brian Arevalo and Jorge Machuca and up and coming Freshman star Janiah Basco, the Cougars took 5th place as a team. Arevalo finished 3rd in the boys’ 5000M run with a time of 16:44. Machuca finished in 8th place, coming in at 17:20. Both Arevalo and Machuca had top 10 finishes all year, and the Cougars counted on them and the rest of the team to help with the 5th place overall finish.

Basco was the big surprise of the day for the Cougars girls team. Taking on the more robust distance of 5000M and racing in the varsity division seems challenging enough. Add in that she is only a freshman, and her accomplishment is quite remarkable, and she will no doubt be the leader in the years to come. Basco finished her race in 2nd place with a time of 20:11.

Congratulations to Basco, Machuca, and Arevalo for their exceptional performance, as well as their teammates Jordy Esqueda, Oliver Calvo, Sergio Flores, Johnny Ochoa, William Souza, Simran Hundal, Jaskaran Singh, Juan Diaz, and Michael Nunn.
