Girls golf got a chance to swing the clubs last Wednesday as they played in the “18 Hole Tournament” hosted by Manteca High School. The event was the first time the Lady Cougar golf team competed this year.

“Our team just plugs along,” said head coach Mr. Torrente. “We are not a golf community where the season ends, and golfers go out and play with friends and family in the offseason.”

So, coach Torrente’s team not only battles lack of opportunity but also competes in a very tough VOL where MUSD school routinely field top-notch golfers. However, Torrente is pleased with their progress and effort.

“My veteran players don’t play on their own, so their game only improves during the season,” Torrente added. “The rest of the girls are brand new to golf and have never swung a club before our first practices in August when we started. I expect them all to do much better toward the end of the season.”

Although viewing golf matches may be difficult for fans, students are encouraged to travel to courses and cheer on the Cougars. As of right now, Weston Ranch is in limbo for a home course while the City of Stockton figures out what they plan to do with the Cougars regular course at Van Buskirk Park.

The Prowl wishes the best of luck to coach Torrente and his golfers for the remainder of the year. Hard work and determination will pay off.
