Math Students Get Chance to Add to Their Skills

This Saturday, April 27th, the University of Pacific here in Stockton will be giving the students at Weston Ranch High School the opportunity to participate in their 9th annual Avinash Raina High School Math Competition.

Each spring, UOP holds this competition in memory of a dedicated Stagg High School student, Avinash Raina, who passed away after being diagnosed with cancer. Avinash was known for his extraordinary math skills, and his parents wanted his legacy to live on and to build a community in their sons’ memory. So to honor their son, they created a completely free and annual math competition for students across the Central Valley to participate and share their love of math.

Every year high school students come and compete by taking a test that is selected based upon your level of knowledge in math. It’s a great event with opportunities to win awards, trophies, and hear from exceptional keynote speakers, such as engineers and professors from UOP. Even if you are not confident with your math abilities, Mrs. Nelson, a math teacher here on campus, encourages you to show up regardless.

“It’s not really about the math. It’s about you trying something new. Getting out the community you are in and expanding yourself,” said Ms. Nelson who will accompany Weston Ranch students for the day.
