Cougars Ready For Another Spike

Men’s Volleyball at Weston Ranch High is the latest sport to be introduced to its students. Boys volleyball will begin its third season, and there has been highs and lows in the team’s brief history. After finishing with a record of 8-13 last year, 5th best in the VOL, this year’s pack of Cougars are eager for improvement and looking for a fantastic season.

The Prowl spoke with head coach Mrs. Chavez and asked about her how she is feeling about the upcoming season. Chavez said, “I feel pretty good about our team. I think they’re going to do pretty well. Eight out of our ten players were on the varsity team last year.”

Some of the players Chavez is excited about this year are seniors Armando Mendoza, Josh Ico, and Junior starter Maikhel Bayot. All three had exceptional seasons last year and hope to improve tremendously this time around. Chavez said, “Most of the team was brand new last year, so it was more about learning the game rather than winning games.”

This year, coach Chavez has her mind set on improving their record from the season prior with a more experienced and capable Cougar team. She hopes to have all players learn to work together as a team and to play at their level, and not at the level of their competition.

These are wise words from a coach who has had over 20 years of prior experience coaching and mentoring young athletes. She will be assisted this year by Mrs. Acoba, and they will prepare their team for the challenging season ahead. This year will also be the first year where the school will include a JV team into the program, which will be run by head coach Jariam Falcon. The addition of a JV team is exciting for the program’s future and is sure to bring more fans to the games and maybe more people to the sport.

Chavez has seen the lack of Cougar support at other sporting events this year, but she hopes to have as much support as possible from the students and families of Weston Ranch High for their upcoming season. The first home game for the Cougars will be on March 4th at 5 o’clock vs. Ceaser Chavez High, and the team hopes to see as many supporters there as possible.
