Cougars to Take On Cougars in Round Two

Tonight at Weston Ranch High School, the Cougars take the next step in their quest to become Section champions as they host Center High School of Antelope. Tip-off for tonight’s game is at 7 pm.

Weston Ranch is coming off a sound thrashing of sixteenth seeded Sierra High school where they defeated the Timberwolves 71-40. The victory was the third time WR defeated Sierra this season and the most significant exclamation point they could add in the rivalry with Sierra. The Timberwolves were never in the game and managed to score four points in the first quarter. Perhaps sparked by some questionable comments from T-Wolves coach Scott Thomason, the Cougars ran the T-Wolves ragged in the first half and never allowed any semblance of a comeback whatsoever the rest of the evening. Donjae Lindsey led all Cougar scorers with 16 points, Gavin Wilburn added 15, and Lydell King chipped in with 10. King was the spark the Cougars needed during a cold shooting spell in the second quarter as he nailed several 3-pointers helping to maintain the big lead.

However, that was then, and this is now. The Cougars face eighth-seeded Center High School tonight, and the matchup should be much more competitive and offer a better challenge than the one Sierra offered last Wednesday. Center, located in Antelope, will come to The Ranch boasting a 21-7 overall record. They are coming off an exciting overtime first-round playoff win over El Capitan, defeating El Capitan 59-55. Center is lead by Junior Michael Wortham (14.9 points per game) and Senior Elias Bonds (11.4). The team averages 62 points per game, shoots 47% from the floor overall and makes 24% of their 3-pointers. Compared to Weston Ranch, who averages 65 points per game, 43% from the floor overall, and connects on 30% of their 3-pointers, Center may give the Cougars fits, and fans are in store for a fast-paced, high-scoring evening.

A victory tonight means Weston Ranch will host another playoff game next Wednesday, February 20th. As always, we wish the best for the basketball team. Again, the game tonight is at 7 pm, and we encourage all students and staff to fill up the Cougar Nation.
