Weston Ranch Juniors and Seniors can now access an Internet scholarship application previously only available to other Stockton high school students.
Scholly, an app found at https://myscholly.com/, had been free to Stockton Unified School District students within Stockton, was not available to Weston Ranch students since our high school is part of the Manteca Unified School District. Weston Ranch is the Manteca Unified’s only high school in Stockton.
During an interview with The Prowl in February, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs told our publication that he would contact City Councilman Jesus Andrade to cover the signup fees to use the Scholly Web site.
Andrade was able to secure funding for Weston Ranch so that Cougar juniors and seniors are able to use Scholly for free. The site charges a $2.99 sign-up fee. The councilman discussed the application and other issues important to the high school with Principal Francine Baird during a visit the Weston Ranch campus in March. Use of the Scholly app is both timely and important as juniors and seniors seek information to acquire scholarships.
School Counselor Linda Wheeler said the issue of scholarships often comes up throughout the year.
Wheeler estimated that counselors receive “about 20 to 30 students asking each year” about scholarships, with the majority of students being seniors.
Counselor Stuart Farrell e-mails a list of available scholarships to seniors each month. Farrell said that counselors speak to seniors at the start of the year.
“Fastweb.com is what we recommend,” Farrell said. While Farrell said that he has directed students to http://www.fastweb.com/, the counselor said that wasn’t familiar with Scholly as yet.
