Cougar or state legislator? Why not both?

One of our very own Cougars, Christian Gomez (’17) will be going to the state capitol as part of the Sacramento Leadership Conference, a unique experience for Top 60 Seniors of California Future Farmers of America (FFA), to step into the shoes of state legislators.

“I applied for the conference since it revolved around politics and interested me,” Gomez said. “You don’t get opportunities like this every day it’s an opportunity of a lifetime, it’s a very rare experience.”

The conference is a four-day event and takes place on March 7th-10th. Gomez was the only student from Manteca Unified School District to be chosen for this rare experience. He will even be able to debate on the chamber floor.

FFA is a student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. Gomez said he joined the FFA since it met his interests he had in agriculture when he was growing up in this area.

There are more than 80,000 members in California’s FFA. Out of this membership, 150 seniors applied for this capitol experience.

“Having a high GPA of course is what they look into when choosing the top seniors,” Gomez said. “But they also take into consideration if you’ve been involved in FFA events and have done volunteer work.”

The conference is solely based on preforming the ability of the legislator and team to put their thoughts into motion. Each senior is given a certain California district and will be learning about topics like education and government issues.
