The Cougars continue their surprising playoff run.
Weston Ranch will battle the Vanden Vikings in the second round of the CIF/Sac Joaquin Tournament at 7 p.m. tonight at Vanden High School, 2951 Markley Lane in Fairfield.
The Vikings (26-2) are currently on a nine-game winning streak.
The Cougars defeated Christian Brothers with a double overtime win, 68-61, on Feb. 22 to start the playoff tournament.
Cougars would be guaranteed at least one additional playoff game at either the Division III or Division IV level.
Despite their opponents’ recent dominance, the Cougars – led by underclassmen – believe they have a chance to compete.
“We are going to execute today and stick to our game plan and try and get the big W,” said Cougar player Makhi Turner (’19). “We are very motivated going into tonight’s game. We are the underdogs so we’re going to shock some people.”
Freshman Gavin Wilburn agreed that the team has a shot to shock.
“They’re a good team but we feel as a team we can beat them. We just have to really focus and do what we do to find a way to win,” Wilburn said. “I feel very confident, all we gotta do is make sure we execute all of our plays and play defense. Make our shots and we will be good.”
Sophomore Raul Melgarejo said the plan is simple, “Go into Friday focused and get the W.”
