Update:

Hours after this story posted, FFA advisor Christopher Livengood received word via e-mail that funding for FFA would be restored. Here is the letter below.

Dear Ag and Ag Education Stakeholders:

This week I have heard from many of you about the status of the $15.4 million allocated at the state level for career technical education and the FFA program.  Please be assured, Governor Brown remains committed to ongoing funding for these programs funded through the California Department of Education.  While one-time funding was used to support these programs in the current year – the Governor is committed to ongoing funding for these programs for 2017-18 and beyond.  I look forward to working with you to get this done and meeting many more of the wonderful students who are the beneficiaries of these programs.

If California Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed state budget passes, some educational programs could undergo drastic changes.

What could the state budget’s success mean for Weston Ranch’s successful FFA, a club that gives students the space to grow vegetables in their own greenhouse and provides students the opportunity to learn about the state legislature?

“The greenhouse would be empty, flower sales would go and these hands-on experiences would be taken away,” said FFA (Future Farmers of America) club advisor Christopher Livengood.

Proposed state budget cuts could strip a possible $15 million from FFA and other Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. By extension, a cut also would impact Oriental Horticulture, Welding and Woodwork classes.

A funding slash would make it difficult to impossible for students like Christian Gomez to travel to Sacramento, as Gomez did earlier this academic year, to see the legislature first-hand as part of an FFA program. Gomez said he’d like to see other students get the chance he enjoyed to help him develop leadership skills in future school years.

About three years ago, Livengood said that a similar budget was proposed but was eventually modified after public pressure persuaded the state legislature to restore funding. Without any changes, Livengood said, the cuts would affect nearly 300 students at Weston Ranch, 200 students district-wide and nearly 90,000 students statewide.
