Kelvin Boateng was one of 9 current Weston Ranch students to earn MUSD summer internships.

Out of numerous candidates who applied for about 60 Manteca Unified School District summer internship positions, 10 successful applicants either currently or recently graduated from Weston Ranch High School.

This likely is the result of students taking the advice of concerned educators including business instructor Ronald Wayman, who took the lead to help applicants secure letters of recommendation and strengthen interviewing skills.

The Prowl recognizes these students. They are: Darwin Baquero (’19), Kelvin Boateng (’18), Christina Carillo, Laray Dacus, Selena Landin (’18) Eyiwumni Laseinde (’18), Billy Phan, Kathy Phan, Autumn Pinkney and Weston Ranch graduate, Elisabeth Alexander. Students were notified of the district’s decision this week. Some are in the fingerprinting process, a prerequisite to work with children in the school district.

Kathy Phan was “hired to be a TK (Transitional Kindergarten) assistant” to gain experience in working and use the money “in the future.”

Her brother, Billy Phan, was hired in the same position and told The Prowl how he trained to do interviews. “I took Success 101 that prepared me to do interviews. I was ready for every question she asked.” said Phan.

Eyiwumni Laseinde earned a clerical position. For her interview, Laseinde said, “I was just being myself and being honest.”

One student found tips to improve his chances in the classroom and online.

“I learned from teachers and YouTube to dress to impress,” said Kelvin Boateng, because “I wanted money to support my mom and buy my own guitar.”

Like the Phans, Christina Carillo also secured a TK position, which Carillo hopes will help her long-term career goal to become an “OB, which is a doctor for labor and delivery.” Carillo said she felt prepared for her district interview based on “interviews in class medical billing and coding.”

Selena Landin said she looked forward to having “an experience outside of just volunteering for school.”
